Root Barriers
Root Barrier Membranes to Control Japanese Knotweed

What Are Root Barrier Membranes That Control Japanese Knotweed?
A root barrier membrane to control the spread of Japanese Knotweed is a geotextile membrane that is installed in the ground; it is a very fine material that does not allow knotweed rhizomes to grow through it. Different materials are available for different circumstances.
When installed correctly a 'cell' can be created that contains the Japanese Knotweed entirely.
Advantages Of Root Barrier Membranes To Control Knotweed
A correctly installed barrier membrane will prevent the spread of Japanese Knotweed past it. A simple vertical barrier can prevent the horizontal spread of Japanese Knotweed through the ground preventing it from leaving or entering a site, from reaching buildings and other engineered structures or to contain it within a certain area in a site.
A horizontal membrane will prevent the spread of knotweed vertically so could be used under foundations or car parks to prevent damage.
When installed together, horizontal and vertical membranes can be used to make a 'cell' underground that completely contains the knotweed and doesn't allow it to spread at all.
Advantages include speed of control, peace of mind that a secure physical barrier has been put in place, reduced cost of removing Japanese Knotweed infested material to landfill and also that control can continue through the winter months when certain types of herbicide cannot be applied.
