Spraying Japanese Knotweed
Spraying Japanese Knotweed

What is Spraying of Japanese Knotweed?
Spraying of Japanese Knotweed usually involves the application of herbicide from a back-pack sprayer to kill the weed. The herbicide is taken into the Knotweed through the foliage and depending on the type of weed killer used it will travel into the rhizomes (roots). Fertilizer is also sometimes applied to speed up the growth of the Japanese Knotweed to increase the amount of foliage available for the take up of the herbicide.
Application must be highly accurate to avoid undesirable spray drift, over spray or waste. Spraying must be conducted by a qualified operator and certain restrictions prevent spraying at certain times of the year. The weather conditions can also affect when Japanese Knotweed can be sprayed and also how effective it is.
Why Use Spraying to Control Japanese Knotweed?
Foliar application of herbicide - putting weed killer on the leaves - is often the cheapest, fastest and most efficient way of controlling Japanese Knotweed. Large areas can be sprayed quickly and the results are quickly noticeable.
Spraying can be used in conjunction with other methods of controlling Japanese Knotweed.
